How we pick the best of Houston

How the My Best Houston editors build each ranking: what customers need, a search across the metro, local reputation, confirmed details and a careful cut.

In a city this size, a ranking that only covers the places everyone already knows is not much help. We want each list to reflect the whole of Houston, from inner-loop neighborhoods to the suburbs along the Grand Parkway, and to point you to businesses that will still be good next year. These are the steps behind every ranking we publish.

  1. Defining what good looks like

Every category starts with a question: what does a customer actually need here? For a mechanic it is honest diagnosis and clear estimates; for a pediatric clinic, access and communication; for a barbecue joint, brisket that is just as good on a Tuesday as on a Saturday. Those needs guide everything that follows.

  2. Scoping the whole metro

We then search widely: inside and outside the Loop, along the major corridors, in the strip centers where so much of Houston does business, and in the communities where families actually live. A strong option in Spring Branch, Gulfton or Pearland gets the same consideration as one in Montrose or River Oaks.

  3. Reading the local reputation

We pay attention to how a business has been regarded by Houstonians over a sustained period: whether customers return, recommend it to neighbors and point to the same strengths again and again. A loyal following built over years tells us more than a viral moment.

  4. Confirming the basics

We confirm each business is operating at the address we show, with a phone number that works and opening hours that are current. If we cannot confirm that a business is open, it does not appear, and after major storms we take a closer look at temporary closures.

  5. Drawing the final line

Only businesses that hold up on all of these counts make the final list. We keep rankings short enough to be useful and broad enough to offer a real choice, and when a category has only a few strong candidates in an area, the list stays short rather than padded.

Keeping pace with Houston

New restaurants open constantly and whole neighborhoods change within a few years, so we revisit our rankings regularly. If you spot a business that has closed, moved or deserves a place, email info@mybesthouston.com with its name and neighborhood, and our editors will look into it. Local tips are always welcome.
